Review of Ward A2 written by a patient
30th January 2018

After moving into the maternity ward from the labour ward the care seemed to change, the day shift midwives on A2 we're brilliant. We were given the option to stay overnight to make sure our baby was feeding right & we had the correct support. Our baby threw up some brown mucus which was scary for us, being new parents. When we approached the night shift midwife, she basically told us my wife had a cracked nipple and she would come and look at our attachment soon she never came we had to Google what the mucus was being that my wife had only fed for a few hours, it couldn't have been a cracked nipple! We also asked for pain relief which didn't materialize! We had to wait until the morning for the day shift staff to answer our questions! A lovely midwifery support worker called Pam came and gave us all the help we had needed, this included confirming the mucus was nothing to worry about, showing us how to bathe our baby and generally answering all our wuestiond! She instantly put us at ease! If we had that care overnight we would have been completely happy!

Review of Labour Ward (BDGH) written by a patient
22nd January 2018

The midwife that delivered our little boy was Stacey Potter, she was absolutely brilliant. Stacey was calm and considerate & totally professional throughout the whole labour. She made sure I maintained my dignity & calmed my nerves. She gave me the confidence to be able to deliver my baby in the most natural way by encouraging me to listen to my body and go with what it wanted to do. Stacey is clearly a very skilled midwife as she knew when to give us the space we needed and when to step in and support us. Myself and my husband are eternally grateful to her for ensuring the safe arrival of our little boy Blair. Also during labour I received a 2nd degree tear, the aftercare from Sam stitching me up was brilliant, and has made my recover alot easier!

Review of A&E (Bassetlaw) written by a patient
20th January 2018

Came in because I had serious chest pains and decided to come in by car rather than ambulance as we did not live far away. Everything was fine apart from the receptionist when we arrived. It should be asked what you have come in for first as if it is serious then it should be seen as quickly as possible not 15 minutes to go over what my phone number was! The receptionist nurse Julie trinkle - something like that looked like she couldn’t care less that I was in agony. And when finally got to the point where she asked what I’d come in for then she still didn’t take it seriously and made me wait 20 minutes in the waiting room. At that point my blood pressure had reached dangerous levels from the chest pains and when it was finally measured by a different nurse I was immediately admitted and given treatment. The staff that treated me were perfect. One was slightly larger with brown hair, but she was one of the nicest ones I’ve met. I just wish that I’d not had that initial stress. Next time I’ll just come in by ambulance to avoid her or go to a different hospital!

Review of Main Outpatients (BDGH) written by a patient
14th January 2018

I attended put patient bloods department following a hernia operation. I was seen by a lady called Julie Trueman who I found to be unprofessional and very abrupt. During my appointment she made no eye contact and not speak to me at all, instead she stood complaining to a colleague about her busy day. I told her she was hurting me and she was not able to get blood a first attempt and again without speaking turned round to get another needle. When I told her "just leave it please" she said "suit yourself duck" in a sarcastic manner. I work as a practitioner for the trust myself and do understand how stressful and busy work can be. However, I do feel that Julie Trueman would benefit from some supervision around her patient care and how she portrays herself to the public. (I cannot be positive about the date I attended the unit but it approximately 7 days after my operation).

Review of Ward B5 written by a patient
7th December 2017

All the staff I met during my stay in Ward B5 were friendly and efficient and did their utmost to help me feel more comfortable. Although it was obviously a busy ward, they managed to answer any questions I had or help me with any difficulties in moving around. I was kept fully informed of the progress of my treatment, and what was liable to follow. As a stranger to the area, it was an example of how good the NHS is when you have such a dedicated and friendly group of workers in every discipline. Thank you all - Keep up the good work. Hope you all have a Happy (and not too busy!) Christmas!

Review of Unknown written by a patient
30th November 2017

I now wish to take the time to voice my concerns over the care I received over the course of my pregnancy. Fortunately as a mother of now four children my last pregnancy was not an unknown in relation to the care, appointments and antenatal procedures I would face, however unlike the care I received in my previous three pregnancies (all be it in a different county) I did not receive half the level of care under Bassetlaw. No.1 The appointments I had with my community midwives seem to be almost nonexistent with me getting well into late pregnancy before it seemed they even knew who I was, along with this was infrequent blood tests, baby heartbeat checks and general baby growth checks. I understand that being my fourth I was of "less risk" etc but I don't believe my level of care should have been any less then that of a first time parent. N0.2 There seems to be a culture that has developed within the community midwives and other related community health professionals that refer every pregnant person to the consultants at the hospital in an almost passing the buck kind of way. Baby "maybe" big = hospital, baby not moved for ten minutes = hospital, trying to arranged home birth = hospital, anything else related to pregnancy = hospital. It seems like midwives want to distance themselves from their job role and show no interested in doing their job, making judgements, decisions or preforming basic checks. This culture has left hospital consultants overwhelmed and pregnant women frustrated. No.3 I did plan a home birth for my pregnancy which in the end I did not get due to lack of midwives. This was really frustrating as the effort I made to make it possible seeing consultants multiple times and being fobbed off intentionally giving me delayed decisions with no justifiable reason etc. I gave up at one point they had won I was beaten into submission and left feeling total alone and hopeless. I was given a glimmer of hope and i pushed on once more to get the go ahead the midwives wanted but then like I say when the day came it was to no joy as a phone call from the midwife on call that night saying she didn't have another midwife to assist her meant I had to go to hospital. All the effort i had put in over the previous months was instantly washed away by the one thing I could not control. No.4 Contact numbers on the bounty pack for both the hospital and labour ward where incorrect when it came to phone with it going straight though to an unknown number dial tone, so while in labour I'm having to search the internet to find a number I could call to get hold of the labour ward. I want to finish off by saying I feel sorry for any new parents as they will not know any different and will just except the poor level of care as just normal, but it's far from adequate with what I say a massive failings that will inevitably put lives at risk both born and unborn.

Review of Day Surgery (BDGH) written by a patient
15th November 2017

The care to me was excellent, for which I am very grateful. It was very disappointing that my wife couldn't stay at my bedside after surgery for even a short period. I was very unhappy, as was my wife, that after a decision by the nursing staff to keep me in hospital overnight, my wife wasn't told until an hour after I was told. She was left in the waiting area of the day ward for over an hour, and very upset.

Review of Ward C2 written by a family member
4th October 2017

My mother received first class treatment right from the start. The paramedics were wonderful, the staff on the A&E department were also wonderful. My mothers treatment on Ward C2 was exceptional in every way. She had first class care and treatment. She was taken to DRI for her Pacemaker procedure and that was also wonderful. We cannot praise my mothers stay enough. Everything was 5 star treatment. We would certainly recommend Ward C2 and Bassetlaw Hospital to our family and friends.
